The Laboratory for Quantitative Experience Design

We are an interdisciplinary research group at the University of Utah. We seek to discover invariant relationships within experience design: precise relationships that exist between an inner environment (a person’s physico-cognitive states), interface (narratological & ludological discourse) and outer environment (virtual worlds).

These relationships are the foundation of products, processes, and tools that we build to empower potential designers to imagine, reflect on, and create experiences for others.

R&D Division
R&D Division
The Research & Development (R&D) Division focuses on research-into-design: research centered on creating standard models that describe causal structures that help anticipate the effect of designed games and virtual worlds on the people that will play them.
Studio Division
Studio Division
The Studio Division focuses on research-through-design: research via the act of designing and for the benefit of design practice; emphasizing needs-based prototyping of interactive experiences, while following participatory and value-sensitive design practices.

The Lab Community

Founded in 2017, we continue to collaborate on cutting-edge research that advances games as a scholarly discipline. We are equipped for systematic design, scientific experiments, research, and teaching around experience design through formal methods. We are housed within the Division of Games, and are affiliated with the Kahlert School of Computing and the Department of Psychology at the University of Utah.
